One of the best places to go in Belgium for a weekend break or a midweek break is Bruges. Handy to get to and very little distance to drive once you`re on the "other side". My advice would be to go via Calais rather than Dover to Zeebrugge. For one thing it`s a much shorter crossing and two, the Ferries run much more frequently, and the few extra miles driving from France over the border to Belgium can be done far more quickly than the extra time taken for the longer crossing. The best times to go are Spring and Autumn, particularly April and October. You`ll avoid the crowds, have more of the town to yourself, and you won`t be queing for ages to get a ride on one of the many boat trips to be had on the myriad of canals. Like a lot of other places, Bruges describes itself as the "Venice" of the North. But it certainly does have an awful lot of waterways. In a very hard Winter they are even frozen over and they hold ice-skating competitions. A Hotel near the centre of the town needn`t cost a fortune. In fact they are quite reasonable, and most are within easy walking distance of all the sights you will want to see. Don`t forget the Museums! They contain some of the world`s Art Treasures and Paintings and should the weather turn bad, well worth a few hours of your time. Below are some of the views we took when we last went. Check it out!
